As we put Thanksgiving in our rear-view mirror and hurtle onward toward December, two of my favorite seasonal beverages have returned!
The Family Friendly One: Egg nog! While some people make their own nog, I prefer the store-bought variety. Egg nog started to show up in stores partway into November.
I like Lactaid’s version of this holiday classic best because dairy and I are not friends and Silk Nog just isn’t quite creamy enough.
One of my favorite things about eggnog is that it kind of always tastes like there’s rum in it, even when there isn’t. Speaking of boozy drinks,

The Slightly More Adult One: I was first introduced to Glühwein while I was living in Germany. It’s mulled wine, and it’s served hot. If you ever have the chance to go to a Christkindlmarkt, or Christmas Market, a mug of hot Glühwein while you’re standing around outside with friends in the cold is just a delightful thing. I hate that the markets are almost certainly closed this year. Stupid Covid.
Trader Joe’s carries bottles of Glühwein this time of year, made in Germany and imported to the US for the consumption of those of us who love it. I was excited to see the bottles all stacked up in the store. All you have to do is heat it up and drink it.
I might bundle up and drink it outside on the balcony, just to have a more authentic experience.
Which do you prefer, eggnog or Glühwein?

My husband and I made mulled wine for the first time last year! It was just okay but I’m looking forward to trying it again. White Russians are our Christmas tree decorating drink, though.

White Russians are delicious, and I should definitely try to find a dairy-free version.

I love egg nog also but every Christmas my husband makes Eierlikor a german egg liqueur drink we learned how to make in Germany at Christmastime. It’s a favorite of the family and now has become a family tradition.

Eggnog is my favourite, no question about it. I miss Germany this time of year, they have such a cozy way a Christmassing (new word ?)

I bought this year’s first carton of Lactaid egg nog during the last round of Thanksgiving dinner grocery shopping. Still tasty. 🙂

I really like eggnog and didn’t know Lactaid had a version. I may try it, but have to be pretty low sugar for me, too.

Aww, that’s unfortunate… I don’t think you’ll have much luck finding a low sugar variant.

Never tried Gluhwein, but sounds intriguing. We enjoy rum in our nog, and 2020 certainly calls for it this year.

Gluhwein is delicious! And I agree, 2020 is definitely a year for hard drinking.

Glühwein – love this spelling! Mulled wine is a firm favourite here in the UK too, it features every year without fail – normally do it ourselves on the hob with a mulled wine spice mix, but will see if I can find this one in the supermarket as well. I’m sure it’ll be drank outside someway too, maybe in the garden when we do socially distanced visits to family in the weeks ahead. Lifting my cup to yours for a toast in advance! (I must also admit that I’ve never tried eggnog, perhaps something to seek out this year.)

Not all eggnogs are created equal… make sure you bring an eggnog-loving friend along to make sure you’ve got a good one. 😀

I like them both too much to choose. 🙂
